This website was designed as part of a larger project which is examining climate and wetland changes in the last 10,000 years? It is intended to assist researchers in identifying seeds they find in sediment cores or samples, thus allowing them to date the occurrence of the particular species. Hopefully this site will be useful to others who need to identify wetland seeds.
The species included in this website were selected from a list of common vascular plants in tidal marshes of the San Francisco Bay Estuary included in Atwater et al, 1979. Both fresh and saltwater plants are included in the list. Scientific names follow Hickman, 1993. Common names are taken from Hickman, 1993; Mason, 1993; Faber.... The species are grouped alphabetically by family and can be viewed individually or as family.
